Rasmussen sparks Vikings

SOFTBALL

COEUR d'ALENE - Chelsey Rasmussen hit a three-run home run in the first inning as the Coeur d'Alene Vikings defeated the Post Falls Trojans 11-4 in a 5A Inland Empire League game Tuesday at Larry Schwenke Field.

"We were swinging the bats really well today and playing great defense," Coeur d'Alene coach Larry Bieber said. "That's very important going into the district tournament. We're playing really good defense as a team right now."

The win leaves Coeur d'Alene (13-5, 6-5 5A IEL) trailing Lewiston (14-6, 6-4) by a half-game entering play today. Lewiston travels to Lake City for a doubleheader today, while the Vikings travel to Lake City on Thursday.

"We've got Lake City in our final regular season game of the year," Bieber said. "We'll need to get a win there to get a better seeding. If both Lewiston and us lose at Lake City, we'll have the same record and it will come down to a coin flip. I know tails never fails, but it always does when I call it."

Rachel Collins had an RBI triple and Dara Kolar had an RBI single in the third inning for Post Falls (4-16, 0-11), which travels to Lakeland today.

POST FALLS - The 5A Inland Empire League-leading Vikings held off the Trojans in the opener, then jumped on the hosts early in the second game.

Drew Turbin went 3 for 3 with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored in the opener for Coeur d’Alene (19-1, 10-0), which has won 13 straight games. Jake Pereira pitched four no-hit innings before leaving on a pitch count.

Bordyn Grieser led off the seventh with a single to break up the no-hitter for Post Falls (6-9, 3-8), and Riley Denney followed with a two-run homer. The Trojans put two more runners on, but Tony Davidson’s fly ball to right center field was caught to end the game.

“We battled,” Post Falls coach Mick Zeller said. “We made some plays defensively, and the only two errors we had led to their runs.”

In the second game, Colin Comack’s two-run single keyed a five-run third inning for Coeur d’Alene. Kaleb DeHaas hit a solo homer in the fifth inning and Levi Pereira hit a two-run shot in the seventh.

Denney hit a two-run double in Post Falls’ four-run fourth.

Post Falls travels to Lakeland today at 4.

Sandpoint 6-3

Lakeland 3-5

RATHDRUM — Eric Nikssarian had two hits and earned the save in the first game for the visiting Bulldogs and Luke Howell singled to score Gage Long in the sixth inning of the nightcap to break a 3-all tie as the Hawks battled back to earn a split of their 4A Inland Empire League doubleheader at Lakeland High.

“Basically, we booted the ball all stinking day,” said Lakeland coach Jason Bradbury of the team’s six errors in the first game. “All of their runs in the fourth inning were unearned runs. We’d been playing good defense up until today and our bats have been there — but our heads weren’t in it today.”

In the seventh inning of the first game, Sandpoint scored an insurance run as Nikssarian singled and came around to score, stealing home on a 3-2 pitch with two outs.

“The umpire motioned like it was a strike and our catcher started walking back to the dugout,” Bradbury said. “I don’t know if our catcher heard it was a strike, but their coach came out and asked what was going on and he said he called it a ball. It’s one of those freaky deals that could only happen in baseball. We definitely out-hit them, but you’ve got to hand it to Sandpoint. They made plays in the field and (Caleb) Nishimoto pitched six really good innings and they took advantage of our errors. Good teams will do that.”

Daniel Mobeck went 3 for 4 in the first game with two runs scored for Lakeland.

In the second game, Cody Vandever hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning to tie the game at 3-3 with one out.

“Cody’s home run got our juices flowing again,” Bradbury said.

With the split, Lakeland (9-10, 2-4 4A IEL) remains a game behind Sandpoint (5-14, 3-5) with the Hawks set to host Moscow in a doubleheader on Thursday. If Lakeland wins both, the Hawks will host the opening game of regionals on Saturday, but if Moscow wins one, Lakeland will travel to Sandpoint.
