STATUE: Protest a rightful exercise

| June 17, 2011 10:00 PM

OK, after reading the venomous diatribe of the ideologues, Jessica Wilks and David Larsen, I felt the urge to chime in on the Idol/Statue/Artwork of Seventh Street.

It seems folks like these are always the first to espouse our various freedoms, however, when it comes down to practice they are, for the most part, an intolerant bunch. If you do not agree with them you are racist, "closed minded" or any other flavor of branding that comes to their minds.

For the life of me, I do not see how one can mold a political issue out of some folks exercising their First Amendment Right to Freedom of Speech. So what if some folks want to protest the statue? It is their RIGHT. However, if it does not fit the agenda of these writers, it is some far right wing, Bible thumping, extremist conspiracy. Methinks these folks should seriously read over their letters before hitting the "send" key. It is better to have people think you are an ideologue than to write a letter to the editor and remove all doubt.

Now about the Statue/Idol/Artwork. I know "beauty is in the eye of the beholder," however, that Seventh Street "artwork" is just plain butt-ugly. It seems totally out of place with the other beautiful art placed through the downtown area. And to think, for just $37,000 you could be the proud owner of it!
