COEUR d'ALENE - The Fourth of July fireworks fundraising drive is under way.

How much, you ask, is needed?

Let's go, once again, for $30,000.

As usual, the Coeur d'Alene Chamber of Commerce is leading the charge. For the past few weeks, it has been soliciting donations.

The fund is supported by local businesses and individuals, and each year, they come through.

"We receive a lot of great support," said chamber President Todd Christensen. "It's a great show, a great way to celebrate our nation's birth and honor those who have sacrificed for our freedom."

Those who donate at least $500 can have their picture in the Coeur d'Alene Press. Those who donate at least $1,000 will receive exclusive access to the chamber's southern patio to watch the fireworks show, and can help push the plunger to set off the first firework of the evening.

The fireworks display generally attracts around 20,000 to downtown Coeur d'Alene, where they can watch from McEuen Field, Tubbs Hill and City Beach.

The 20-minute show begins around 10 p.m.

The chamber will also be raising money in other ways.

There's the Backward Bucket Brigade before the Fourth of July parade, the Marina Challenge and downtown city parking fees on the Fourth, as well.

Diane Higdem, chamber events coordinator, is the main contact for fireworks donations. She can be reached at 292-1635.
