TMDL: A loss for Kootenai County

| July 27, 2011 11:07 AM

Do the residents of Kootenai County have any idea of the potentially devastating economic impact that Washington Department of Ecology's TMDL water quality requirement will have on them? After hearing presentations by local officials, the concern and frustration expressed is alarming. The intense restrictions being imposed on the Spokane River flowing through North Idaho will cause sewer rates to rise significantly and will keep business from investing and growing in Kootenai County.

Meanwhile, Washington's self-imposed restrictions on water quality of the Spokane River on their side of the border are significantly less, allowing economic growth on the other side of the state line. Where is the science to back up the justification for this disparity? Washington appears to be manipulating the system to tip the balance of economic development in their favor. The economic impact study estimates that the new requirements will result in a projected annual GDP loss of $70 million for Post Falls, and a likely greater loss for the city of Coeur d'Alene. Sewer plant upgrades in Hayden, Coeur d'Alene and Post Falls will cost more than $100 million, resulting in significantly higher user fees.

How many of our residents are looking forward to a steep rise in sewer rates? How many will enjoy driving to Washington to go to work every day? If these issues concern you, get informed and get involved. Contact your local legislators or city officials.
