4-H: Funding urged, deserved

| July 27, 2011 11:05 AM

The proposed budget cuts by County Clerk Clifford Hayes, including the 4-H program, would be a blow to North Idaho children and teenagers.

Having grown up in the 4-H program myself, I understand its importance. The 4-H pledge itself explains how it promotes self-esteem, pride and respect. "I pledge my Head to Clearer Thinking, My Heart to greater Loyalty, My Hands to Larger Service and my Health to Better Living. For my Club, my Community, my Country and my World." It's dedication to being viable, contributing members of our society!

In light of ours and many Kootenai County families' struggles to pay bills, I was painfully astonished by Mr. Hayes solution for 4-H families "...to maybe join up with the Kroc Center or the Boys and Girls Club." Really, Mr. Hayes?

The thought that any family could easily go from paying $15 a year in 4-H, to anything from $15 - $67 per MONTH at the Kroc Center is inconsiderate and out of touch. The Boys & Girls Club costs a more affordable $20 a year, but their programs are size limited. This is not the case in 4-H. Plus, neither of these fine options offer what 4-H does with livestock, dog and many other animal programs.

As a registered voter, I would like to hear explanations as to why the 4-H program is not important enough, why Kootenai County families are not important enough, why our local youth, environment and rural animal husbandry are not important enough to support.
