STATUE: Foes aren't bigots
In response to Devin L. Heilman's "My Turn" column July 14, "Statue versus small minds," I am speechless and take offense.
This Ganesha, Hindu God statue is offensive to me sitting right on a street corner in downtown Coeur d'Alene. Devin says we who object are small minded, Christian bigots etc. Not true.
My offense is where this is located. If she wants this town to be so culturally minded why not put this in one of our fine art galleries downtown where those who want to view it can and those of us who don't, can choose not to. Right now we have no choice. It sticks out like a sore thumb and I feel my rights are being stepped on as a member of this community.
Coeur d'Alene is what it is because of its natural beauty and simplistic lifestyle. Trying to make it something entirely out of character is demeaning to its purpose. If you want cultural growth go to the big cities. Devin admits in her article that this statue is cherished in a culture very different than our own. How true, we are not a Hindu community. If we put the cross in a Hindu town it would not be welcome there. Thank you for allowing me to state my opinion on this.
