4-H: County can't afford loss

| July 20, 2011 10:00 PM

I found the news that 4-H could be cut here in Kootenai County to be horrible news. I grew up here, born and raised. I was fortunate to be able to live in the country where I got to participate in many 4-H projects. My sister, brother and I learned a lot in the many projects they offer. From animal care to cooking, from crafts to mechanics and from survival to gun safety.

As far as the other things mentioned to replace 4-H, I don't think the Kroc Center would appreciate the pigs coming in for a swim, I don't think they offer shooting sports or small engines projects, and I don't think the Boys and Girls Club puts on any horse shows or offer the chance to show your projects off and what you have learned, by completing them, at the fair.

The Kroc Center is not able to and cannot replace 4-H in any way! 4-H is a very inexpensive organization to belong to yet it's very educational. Please do not take such a productive and positive option from the youth of Kootenai and Shoshone counties away. It would be a HUGE loss for our community. Not to mention you would not see the animals at the fair anymore as they are mostly 4-H projects animals.
