No. 4 Coeur d'Alene takes down No. 1 Post Falls

| January 28, 2011 8:00 PM

WRESTLING

POST FALLS - The fourth-ranked (5A) Coeur d'Alene Vikings earned pins in the first three matches Thursday on the way to a 41-23 win over the top-ranked Post Falls Trojans in an Inland Empire League dual on Thursday at The Arena.

"Getting three pins to start it really set the pace for us tonight," Coeur d'Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. "I thought it was a big win for us tonight. We took the mindset that we expected to win and I thought we wrestled well in some spots and others we didn't. Our kids responded well and overall I'm real happy with the win."

Hudson Staub (125 pounds) and Johnny Peregrina (160) won by decision for Coeur d'Alene, which hosts the inaugural Coeur d'Alene Invitational today.

"It was a tough loss for us," Post Falls coach Pete Reardon said. "We're facing a little bit of adversity in our program right now with some illness. It's tough to win against a team like that with a couple of guys out. We'll use this as motivation to finish the season strong and the right way."

Post Falls was without James Ost and Mitch Craine, who were both out with illnesses. Both will also miss this weekend's Coeur d'Alene Invitational starting today at Coeur d'Alene High.

Tanner Riekenaw (119) and Cole Jesienouski (171) had major decision wins for Post Falls.

n The inaugural Coeur d’Alene Invitational, consisting of 12 teams, unfolds today and Saturday at Coeur d’Alene High.

Pod matches are today beginning at 4 p.m. Wrestling resumes Saturday at 9 a.m., with the semifinals around 11 a.m. and the finals around 4:30 p.m.

The tourney essentially replaces the George Wild Invitational, which ran for years on this weekend in Kellogg. That tournament was in jeopardy last year, when it was feared Kellogg High would not be able to field sports teams this year. Area teams did not want to lose a tournament on this weekend, so Coeur d’Alene High offered to take it over.

Following pod matches today, eight wrestlers in each weight will advance to Saturday’s championship bracket, and four will compete in the “B” bracket.

Here is today’s dual schedule:

4 p.m. — Bonners Ferry vs. Lakeland, St. Maries vs. Timberlake, Kellogg vs. Post Falls, Wallace vs. Lake City.

Approx. 6 p.m. — Bonners Ferry vs. American Falls, St. Maries vs. Coeur d’Alene, Kellogg vs. Sandpoint, Wallace vs. Priest River.
