DISTRICT HOOP SHOOT

The Coeur d'Alene Elks Lodge will be well represented at the Idaho State Elks Hoop Shoot on Feb. 12 in Kellogg.

Five of the six competitors from the area advanced to the state competition by winning the Idaho North District Hoop Shoot on January 22 at Sunnyside Elementary School in Kellogg.

The day started out promising for the kids from Coeur d'Alene and Post Falls with sweeps in both the 8-9 and 10-11 year-old divisions.

Coeur d'Alene's Marlee Lambert ran away with the girls 8-9 division, hitting 19 of her 25 shots. Abby Barnes of Sandpoint was a distant second with a score of eight. Barnes was followed by Skylar Hill of Wallace with six and Kellogg's Jaron Figueroa with four.

It was much closer in the boys side of the competition. Dylan Bengtson of Coeur d'Alene hit his last shot of the competition to tie Kellogg's Graden Nearing with 19. During the tiebreaker, Nearing started things off by missing the first three extra shots before getting back on track by making the last two. Bengtson stepped up to the line and hit his first three attempts in the extra period to seal the win. Wallace's Zack Welch took third with 18 and Sandpoint's Dylan Hittle followed at 15.

The girls 10-11 age group was more of the same. Samantha Swayze of Coeur d'Alene took a big early lead making seven of her 10 shots in the first round. After her opponents finished their second-round attempts, Swayze had already clinched the win and the trip to state. Swayze finished with 16 points. Rylie Gunderson of Wallace was the runner-up with six and Kimmie Krous of Kellogg was third with four.

Swayze represented the North District last year in the girls 8-9 division.

Post Falls' David Bourgard, representing the Coeur d'Alene Lodge, earned his victory with a little room to spare. He outdistanced Sandpoint's Tyrone Larson 18-14. Matt Farkas of Wallace was third with 10 shots and Trevor Bumgardner of Kellogg was fourth with eight.

Julia Roach of Coeur d'Alene rounded out the victorious day with a win in the 12-13 girls division. Roach was consistent with seven shots made in the first round and 11 in the second for a final score of 18 out of 25. Wallace's Gretchen Farkas had a slow start but rallied to make a contest out of it. Farkas finished with 14. Tristin Krous of Kellogg hit nine shots and Antonia Martin of Sandpoint hit four shots.

The boys division in the 12-13 age group was a quick contest with two of the four shooters failing to show up. Coeur d'Alene's Sean Morford started out strong but a rough streak in the second round dropped him to second place with a final score of 15. Justin Boyer of Wallace used a strong 11 out of 15 in the second round to earn the win with a final tally of 17.

The six winners from the state competition will advance to the regionals on March 5 in Portland, Ore. The state champions from Idaho, Oregon, Washington and Alaska will compete for the right to shoot at the national competition.

The Coeur d'Alene Area Swim Team sent 17 swimmers to the 35th annual Washington Open swim meet held in Federal Way, Wash., Jan. 20-23. There were 616 swimmers represented by 58 teams from much larger Seattle- and Portland-based teams; CAST achieved a fifth-place team finish.

Individual highlights include top-eight finishes by Anna de Tar (50 freestyle), Joe Loftus (200 and 400 individual medleys, 500 freestyle, 100 and 200 butterfly, 100 and 200 backstroke), Pat Loftus (100 backstroke and 200 freestyle) and Bryce Kananowicz (500 and 1,000 freestyle, 200 and 400 individual medleys, 100 and 200 butterfly, 100 and 200 backstroke).

The 4x200 freestyle relay of Joe Loftus, Ethan Cordes, Pat Loftus, and Bryce Kananowicz earned medal finishes by taking third overall. Kananowicz also earned the men's high point award for most individual points scored.
