Smith's last-second hoop lifts Charter

COEUR d'ALENE - Brian Smith converted on a 3-point play with .2 seconds remaining to lift Coeur d'Alene Charter Academy past Valley Christian 48-45 in a nonleague game Tuesday night at Holy Family Catholic School.

"It was kind of a defensive struggle in the first three quarters," Coeur d'Alene Charter coach Brian Childs said. "Both teams seemed to find a little rhythm in the fourth quarter. We held the lead throughout the game and were just fortunate to make a play at the end of the game."

Greg Roman had 16 points and nine rebounds for Coeur d'Alene Charter (13-2), which travels to Kootenai on Feb. 3.

RATHDRUM - Brady Bagby scored 23 points to lead the Eagles past the Hawks in a nonleague game at Hawk Court.

"We came out in the third quarter and played zone and they went to man defense and created some turnovers," Lakeland coach Trent Derrick said. "We just turned it over too much in the third quarter."

Eric Cooper scored 19 of his team-high 22 points in the first half for Lakeland (3-14), which outrebounded West Valley 31-28. Taylor Derrick had seven rebounds and seven points for Lakeland, which travels to Sandpoint on Tuesday.

"It was a good, hard-fought game," Kootenai coach Andrew Whipple said. "Wallace made their shots when they needed to."

Wallace extended its lead with an 8-0 run to close out the first half.

Hayden Kraack scored 12 points for Kootenai (3-9, 2-3 NSL), which hosts Coeur d'Alene Charter on Feb. 3.

Stephen Heinig scored 12 points for Wallace (4-8, 2-2), which hosts Clark Fork on Friday.

"We played really well out of the gate tonight," Timberlake coach Matt Miller said. "We jumped out 21-5 and looked good on both sides of the ball and were able to keep it going all the way through the game."

Sydnie Malloy scored 14 points for Timberlake (14-3, 6-0 IML), which hosts Sandpoint on Thursday.

RATHDRUM - Hannah Love scored a game-high 23 points as the visiting Eagles defeated the Hawks in their regular season finale at Hawk Court.

"We had a stagnant offensive execution tonight," Lakeland coach Steve Seymour said. "We struggled a bit tonight. We've had a couple of games where we've struggled a little bit. Right now, it's time for us to pick ourselves up and play a little harder and play with the enthusiasm we had a few games ago. I'm confident we can do it."

Jenna Davis scored 11 points and Neena Buchmann had six rebounds for Lakeland, which only had four rebounds in the second half.

Lakeland (10-10) hosts Sandpoint next Tuesday in the opening round of the 4A Region 1 tournament at Hawk Court.

SPOKANE - Senior Paige Kelly shot 6 of 8 from beyond the 3-point line for a game-high 28 points as the Panthers defeated the Warriors in a nonleague game.

"We were able to get some steals and push the ball up the floor," Coeur d'Alene Charter coach Logan Grant said. "We hit Paige when she spotted up and anything she missed (Amber) Ferguson put back."

Ferguson had 11 points and 12 rebounds for Coeur d'Alene Charter (13-5), which hosts the Kellogg JV team on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Holy Family Catholic School.
