Buchmann shines on offense, defense for Lakeland girls

RATHDRUM - Neena Buchmann came through at both ends of the floor as the Lakeland Hawks scratched out a 39-33 victory over the Sandpoint Bulldogs in 4A Inland Empire League play Friday night at Hawk Court.

Buchmann, a senior, scored 18 points and held Sandpoint's top scorer, Maggie Kirscher, to six.

"Neena Buchman, I thought, played a great game," Lakeland coach Steve Seymour said. "She hit some big shots and she played great defense on Maggie Kirscher."

Jenna Davis scored nine points and Darby Murray had five steals for Lakeland (10-9, 3-1 4A IEL), which plays host to West Valley on Tuesday.

Hailey Olin scored 10 points for Sandpoint (7-11, 0-4), which scored seven baskets and hit 17 of 25 from the foul line.

Sandpoint, the No. 3 seed, will travel to No. 2 seed Lakeland on Feb. 1 in the first round of the 4A Region 1 tournament. Moscow is the No. 1 seed.

COEUR d'ALENE - Kyeli Parker totaled 13 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals for the Vikings, ranked fifth in 5A, at Elmer Jordan Court.

Kendalyn Brainard had nine points and six rebounds, Carli Rosenthal had 10 points and four assists and Hailey Petit had six rebounds for Coeur d'Alene (14-4), which plays host to Lewis and Clark tonight at 7:30.

Moscow (5-13) scored three baskets, all in the first quarter, and was shut out in the middle two quarters.

ST. MARIES - Amber Hawkes scored 16 of her game-high 22 points in the second half as the visiting Timberwolf junior varsity rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit.

Kaytrin Thaut scored 10 points, Dusti Huddleston had seven points, nine rebounds, five steals and four assists, and Tia Asbury had eight points and four steals for St. Maries (3-11), which hosts Bonners Ferry today at 2.

RATHDRUM - Blaine Shultz hit a jumper with 11 seconds remaining to give the Bulldogs the victory over the Hawks in a 4A Inland Empire League game at Hawk Court.

Lakeland attempted to drive the length of the court, but could not get a good shot off to tie the game.

"I chose not to call a timeout because our transition offense had been working," Lakeland coach Trent Derrick said. "We didn't get a good shot off and I probably should have called a timeout. Sandpoint did a good job of executing late. Our kids did a good job tonight and are coming along pretty well."

Hunter Arno and Aaron Spencer had 11 points apiece, Arno eight rebounds for Lakeland (3-13, 0-3 4A IEL), which hosts West Valley on Tuesday.

Jackson Olin scored 12 points for Sandpoint (8-6, 2-0).

COEUR d'ALENE - A pair of dunks from Deon Watson highlighted Coeur d'Alene's 21-0 run to start the second half, and the 5A Vikings defeated 4A Moscow in nonleague play at Elmer Jordan Court.

Chad Chalich scored a game-high 20 points for the Vikings, who had 16 from Watson and 13 from Jake Matheson.

"We shared the ball really well and made some good passes," Coeur d'Alene assistant coach Bill Hughes said. "We scored a lot of points off the fast break, which was created by playing some really good defense."

Coeur d'Alene (11-5) hosts Lake City on Thursday.

Roby Jung scored 18 points for Moscow (4-9).

COEUR d'ALENE - Jake Mercer's free throw with 3.3 seconds left lifted the visiting Lumberjacks past the Timberwolf junior varsity at Lake City High.

Mercer finished with 14 ponts and five assists for St. Maries (12-2), which plays host to Bonners Ferry today at 3:30. Ian Heath added 10 points and nine rebounds.

Justin Pratt scored a game-high 18 points for the Lake City JV.
