Timberlake beats Lakeland for first time

| January 21, 2011 8:00 PM

WRESTLING

RATHDRUM - Trevor Roth (140 pounds) and Walker Herring (145) won the final two matches as visiting Timberlake beat Lakeland for the first time ever, 36-29 on Thursday night.

"That's been a goal I've been pushing for since I've been here," third-year Timberlake coach Ryan Montang said. "We've got a little closer every year, and this year was our year."

Montang also had praise for Kody Hongslo at 119, who avenged a loss to Dustin Hannawalt at a tournament earlier this season.

"We lost two big matches that we were winning, but some guys stepped up pretty big," Montang said.

Roth pinned Jesse Putman in 58 seconds, and Herring clinched it with a 3-0 victory over David Nelson.

Michael Garritone had a pair of pins on the night at 125 pounds for Lakeland.

"We bumped up almost our entire lineup one weight class vs. Timberlake, but I thought our guys wrestled well against some bigger, more experienced opponents," Lakeland coach Rob Edelblute said. "J.R. Ramos stepped up and got the pin and Jesse Putman was wrestling well and in control of his match before losing a heartbreaker (to Roth)."

Lakeland wrestles at the Clearwater Classic today and Saturday in Lewiston. Timberlake returns to action Jan. 28-29 at the Coeur d'Alene tournament.
