School districts throughout North Idaho set to hold spelling bees
School districts throughout North Idaho have begun holding spelling bees this month as qualifiers to the North Idaho Regional Spelling Bee, held at North Idaho College Saturday, March 19.
The winner of the regional bee will receive an all-expense paid trip to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., in June, courtesy of bee sponsor Hagadone Newspapers.
Volunteers stepped up at 12 school districts across the five northern counties of Idaho, in addition to districts made up of home schoolers and private schools, to hold qualifying spelling bees.
According to North Idaho Regional Spelling Bee Coordinator Mindy Patterson of North Idaho College, a total of 61 schools are involved in this year's spelling bee from 12 districts across North Idaho, including home schoolers and private schoolers.
District spelling bees will wrap up in January in preparation for the North Idaho Regional Spelling Bee at NIC in March. Patterson expects approximately 50 students to participate in the eighth annual event.
