Local throwers compete

at WSU Indoor Open

PULLMAN - Post Falls junior Austin Funk made the finals of the hammer throw at the Washington State University Indoor Open meet on Friday night.

Funk, who was representing Club Hammer Idaho, threw 40-feet, 11 inches to qualify for the finals. Since he was throwing a 35-pound college weight, the mark ranks him sixth nationally and the second junior.

Jonathan Murray, a senior from Coeur d'Alene High, had a throw of 37-2 to rank him seventh nationally.

George Mathews of Hayden Lake won the master's division with a throw of 18.19 meters.

Dodgeball league

forming in Rathdrum

Registration is ongoing for an adult dodgeball league in Rathdrum.

The league is a coed league for ages 18 and up. Teams need to have a minimum of six players and a maximum of 10.

Games will be held from Feb. 8 to March 22 from 6 to 8 p.m. at John Brown Elementary. Cost is $120 per team and must be registered by Feb. 4. A $25 late registration fee will be charged past Feb. 4.

Team managers will have a mandatory meeting prior to the start of games.

Hot Shot competition

scheduled for Feb. 17

RATHDRUM - The third annual Hot Shot basketball competition will be held on Thursday, Feb. 17.

The competition is open to anyone from grade four to adults. Cost is $10 per participant, with a site to be determined in Rathdrum. Each contestant is given one minute to score points from designated spots on the court.

Spokane Golf Show

set for Feb. 19-20

The 13th annual Spokane Golf and Travel Show will be held on Feb. 19 and 20 in the Spokane Convention Center. Event hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Admission is $12 and children 12 and under are free.

Every adult paid admission will receive two free rounds of golf, one free round of golf from Spokane's Fairways Golf Course and another from a variety of courses. There will be golf seminars, retailers, area and regional golf courses and new equipment as well.

Events scheduled to

celebrate EWU's football title

The unveiling of the NCAA FBS championship trophy and a short parade in Spokane will highlight a pair of celebrations on Friday and Saturday to honor the Eastern Washington University football team.

The Eagles capped a 13-2 season by winning their last 11 games of the year and capturing the national title with a 20-19 win over Delaware on Jan. 7 in Frisco, Texas.

Friday's event will start at 6 p.m. at Reese Court on the EWU campus in Cheney and will be broadcast live on SWX. The event is free and doors open at 5 p.m. with seating on a first-come, first-serve basis. The celebration will also be carried live via radio on ESPN 700 ESPN and www.espnnorthwest.com. Following the event, ESPN 700 will re-broadcast the national title game.

Saturday's celebration will start at noon with a parade starting at Washington and Main in downtown Spokane and ending at River Park Square.

A rally will follow.

AFL hires new supervisor of officials, make rules changes

TULSA, Okla. - Arena Football League commissioner Jerry B. Kurz announced the hiring of long-time official Carl Paganelli as the new supervisor of officials.

With the addition of Paganelli, the AFL adopted a number of rule changes and adjustments that will boost the pace of the game.

Paganelli, who is currently serving as supervisor of the Mid-American Conference officials, served as the supervisor of officials for the AFL from 1993-01 and has also served for the af2, XFL and the Fresno Football Officials Camp.

He will also oversee the multiple rule changes and adjustments during the 2011 season.

Instead of being docked 5-yards for a high-motion man offside, the penalty will result in a 10-yard penalty. The penalty for defensive offside will also be adjusted and rosters will include 21 active players and three inactive players for a 24-man roster.
