Nielsen, Jones capture tourney titles

WRESTLING

OREGON CITY, Ore. - Former Coeur d'Alene High standout Jesse Nielsen (174 pounds) and Jamelle Jones (197) won championship in their weight classes for NIC in the Clackamas Open on Saturday.

"It was a pretty good weekend for us," NIC coach Pat Whitcomb said. "Especially after getting after the No. 1 team (Clackamas, on Friday). Getting a couple of champs at this tournament was good. We needed to get a lot of matches after having a break, and need to get back into that grind again."

Freshman Braden Mowry (141) and Jake Mason (165) finished second for NIC, which hosts Simon Frasier on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Christianson Gym.

125 - Kyle McCrite, NIC, d. Mercado, Southwestern Oregon, by default. (fifth place).

133 - Brock Banta, defeated David Frasier of Southwestern Oregon 5-2 (fifth).

133 - Brett Gast, 2-2.

141 - Braden Mowry, NIC, lost by decision 3-1 for second place.

149 - Troy Cunnigham, 2-2.

157 - Jeremy Bommarito, defaulted to Eric Jones, Highline (sixth place). McKray Jones, 2-2. Jacob Rodriguez, 1-2.

165 - Jake Mason, lost by 9-6 decision to John Tuck of Oregon State (second place).

174 - Jesse Nielsen, beat Cody Weishoff of Oregon State 4-0. (championship).

184 - Justin Korthuis, 1-2.

197 - Jamelle Jones, beat Mak Jones of Oregon State 4-0 (championship).

285 - Matthew Foxworthy, defaulted to Jarod Pitassi of Southern Oregon (sixth).

COEUR d'ALENE - Freshman Anthony DiLoreto had 17 points, six rebounds and three blocked shots as the 19th-ranked Cardinals defeated the Spartans in a Scenic West Athletic Conference game at Rolly Williams Court.

Idris Lasisi scored 12 points off the bench for NIC (17-3, 2-3 SWAC), which hosts Salt Lake on Thursday. Salt Lake (18-2, 4-1) defeated Snow College 95-82 earlier Saturday and is tied for first in the SWAC.

Jon Henderson scored 17 points for Colorado Northwestern (5-12, 0-5).

Former Coeur d’Alene High standout Deanna Dotts had 11 points and 12 rebounds for NIC (17-2, 3-2 SWAC), which hosts SWAC-leading Salt Lake on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. Salt Lake (14-3, 4-1) defeated Snow College 72-60 on Saturday.

Tamekia Hunt scored 12 points for Colorado Northwestern (6-13, 0-5).
