Woman sentenced for gun incident

SANDPOINT - A North Idaho woman was ordered Tuesday to serve five days on the Bonner County's sheriff's labor program after pleading guilty to a reduced charge of discharging a firearm within city limits.

Cheryl Lee Poznikoff was originally charged with possession of a firearm while intoxicated after she allegedly opened fire at Condo del Sol last September. There were no injuries, although city Prosecutor Lori Meulenberg called Poznikoff's conduct "very dangerous."

Poznikoff's level of intoxication was measured at 0.36, more than four times the legal limit to drive.

Poznikoff's Coeur d'Alene defense counsel, David Lohman, emphasized that the level-action rifle discharged in a random manner and that his client was not targeting anybody.

Judge Debra Heise imposed a 90-day jail sentence with 83 days suspended and credit for two days she spent in custody, court records show. She was also fined $300 and placed on probation for two years.

Poznikoff, a 29-year-old who now lives in Rathdrum, told Heise she remembers little of the night in question aside from drinking at a barbecue.
