Huskies drive past Ducks

Freshman Terrence Ross scored a season-high 25 points and No. 23 Washington shut down Oregon in the final 12 minutes, pulling away for an 87-69 victory Thursday night in Seattle.

Ross made up for a slow night from leading scorer Isaiah Thomas - although Thomas closed strong - and the Huskies (11-3, 3-0 Pac-10) won their first three conference games for the first time in six seasons.

Oregon's Joevan Catron made things interesting by starting the second half with 11 straight points and helping Oregon take its first lead at 42-41. Catron finished with 20 points for the Ducks (7-8, 0-3).

Arizona 73, California 71: At Tucson, Ariz., Derrick Williams scored a career-high 31 points, 19 in the second half, and grabbed 12 rebounds, and Arizona (13-3, 2-1 Pac-10) rallied from a nine-point deficit to escape with a victory over California (7-7, 0-2) on Thursday night.

Kevin Parrom led the Bears with 17 points.

Stanford 55, Arizona State 41: At Tempe, Ariz., Josh Owens powered his way to 15 points and 11 rebounds, and Stanford (9-4, 2-0) earned a rare conference road win by beating Arizona State (8-6, 1-2).

Coming off a resounding victory in its Pac-10 home opener, Stanford got the road portion of the conference schedule off to a good start after going 3-15 the previous two seasons.

Fresno State 63, Louisiana Tech 56: At Ruston, La., Garrett Johnson scored 17 points as Fresno State (7-6, 3-0 Western Athletic Conference) defeated slumping Louisiana Tech (9-8, 0-3).

Greg Smith had a double-double (14 points, 12 rebounds) to aid Fresno State, which built its largest lead at 18 points early in the second half.

Louisiana Tech's Olu Ashaolu answered with his own double-double (20 points, 11 rebounds).

Saint Mary's 98, Loyola Marymount 75: At Los Angeles, Mickey McConnell scored 21 points and Rob Jones 20 as the Gaels (13-2) rocked the Lions (7-8) in the West Coast Conference opener for both schools.

Vernon Teel scored 19 points to lead the Lions.

Pepperdine 75, San Diego 55: At Malibu, Calif., Lorne Jackson scored a career-high 26 points and Pepperdine (7-11) pulled away in the second half to defeat San Diego (3-12) in a WCC opener.

Matt Dorr led the Toreros with 16 points.

No. 20 Illinois 88, Northwestern 63: At Champaign, Ill., Demetri McCarney scored 14 points to lead Illinois (13-3, 3-0 Big Ten) past Northwestern (9-4, 0-3).

No. 24 Cincinnati 66, Xavier 46: At Cincinnati, Yancy Gates scored a season-high 22 points as Cincinnati (15-0) downed Xavier (8-5).
