Dog pound gets facelift

| December 27, 2011 8:00 PM

ST. ANTHONY - The city's impound building for dogs caught running at large is getting some needed improvements.

The pound will be closed a total of about a month while city crews make the repairs, according to Police Chief Jim Smith.

In the meantime, if dogs are impounded they will be taken to the Rexburg dog pound, where the charge is $85 per dog, Smith said.

The improvements will make it easier for city crews to clean and to keep clean.

Smith says he talked to people from the Humane Society for advice on the repairs, which include a stainless steel floor and improved drains.

"It will be more sanitary," the police chief said. The city will also put in a new heater at the pound. The existing one is meant for outdoors and could make the dogs sick.
