RENT: A matter of real standards
The uproar over the play "RENT" has turned over lots of rocks (Letters, Dec. 11). Paige Marshall rages against hypocrisy with the argument that since there are other evils in the world, we should not condemn ANY. Let only the person who is totally without sin condemn any sin.
Alec Ferguson favors "acceptance, community, etc." without judgment. I'll bet he has some limit, somewhere, that he finds unacceptable - thereby becoming judgmental. David Gigler condemns judgment as "hate and bigotry," preferring to simply "love each other" regardless of perversion. Erika Pearson reminds us that we live in the 21st century and that "people should be tolerant of other cultures and ways of life by now." Of course she "cannot stand you Bible-thumpers."
The overarching theme from these folks is to accept ANYthing, thereby showing how wonderfully sophisticated we are. Don't condemn ANYthing, else you are a hypocrite, since we all have faults. These are typical liberal positions that free them from being held to any standards - since they claim none. Life's easier that way. Trying to do better results in failure, so just wallow in perversion and congratulate yourself on being "open minded." One wonders how many of these writers came here from California.
"Right is right, even if no one is doing it; wrong is wrong, even if everyone is doing it."
