Lightning burst sparks Idaho fires

| August 5, 2011 9:00 PM

BOISE (AP) - A lightning burst sparked more than 30 fires in southern Idaho, requiring personnel from federal, state and local agencies to spread out to contain the damage.

Parched conditions with temperatures ranging into the low 90s conspired to create prime fire-starting conditions.

Fires on Bureau of Land Management territory included the Sailor on more than 2,500 acres nine miles west of Roseworth and the two-square-mile Alky fire nine miles north of Glenn's Ferry.

That blaze required nine engines, two bulldozers and a pair each of helicopters and air tankers.

There were another 15 small, quarter-acre fires reported on the Boise National Forest.

Several blazes kicked up elsewhere, too, including a 257-acre fire along U.S. Highway 95 near Midvale and a five-acre smoker in northwest Boise that was controlled at 1 p.m.
