Abate to begin caring for patients at Dirne this week

Dirne Community Health Center announced that Dr. Joseph Abate will be a staff physician for family practice at 1006 Ironwood Drive.

Abate recently stepped aside from his position on the Dirne CHC board of directors to begin caring for patients.

He begins his practice this week, and will be transitioning to the chief medical officer as Dr. Gayle Smith clears time for her expected child.

"Dr. Abate is an amazing physician with a huge heart," said Mike Baker, chief executive officer of Dirne CHC.

"We see the impacts of budget cuts and shifting priorities every day. Our community is sick, and Dr. Abate is one more person willing to break from the traditional system and join us as we care for our neighbors and friends without access to health care."

Abate has 27 years of private practice as a cardiologist, and studied medicine at Drexel University in Pennsylvania. He worked as the director of cardiology at Geisinger Medical Center in Allentown, Pa., for three years before moving to the Arizona Heart Institute, in Phoenix, for 17 years.

"I imagine a future in which Dirne Community Health Center is the cornerstone of a true community solution to health care," Abate said. "Not only will we be known for the quality and affordability of our health care for all patients, but we can be a strong partner in the treatment of mental illness, substance abuse and a champion of healthcare for the homeless and the uninsured."
