LIFE: Who are we - really?

| April 17, 2011 10:00 PM

There was a story on the Today Show about a little boy whose mother painted his toenails pink. They had a survey about what people think and the response was evenly split 50/50. There were extreme views on both sides of the aisle. We have always dressed up pretending to be something we are not; but who are we, really?

Are we Men, Women, White, Black, Rich, Poor, Democrat, Republican, Independent, Tea Partier, Irish, Catholic, Baptist, Racist, Pedophile, Muslim, Jew, Murderer, Rapist, Holy Roller, Bible Thumper, Japanese, Chinese, Russian, American, Cowboy, Indian, etc. etc. Just who the hell are we anyway.

We say we are the children of the Living God, but is that who we really are? Some people say we are made in the image of our Creator. If that is so, then we are a visual representation of a mental perception. I know it sounds like a play on words and that is exactly what it is.

We think we are our physical body. We say that we have a soul. We think life begins either at conception or with the first breath. We know that the body dies a physical death but we believe our soul goes to heaven, somewhere out there. And if we were bad, then our soul goes to hell, somewhere down there.

This is what I believe. We do not have a soul. What we have is a body. What we are is a soul or spirit if you prefer. Our spirit is everlasting, eternal and undying.
