New joints for the new generation

It used to be that the only people who knew they needed a joint replacement were my grandparents, or their friends. That's not the case anymore. The patients undergoing this surgery are getting younger.

Researchers found that by 2016 more than 50 percent of patients needing hip or knee replacement will be under 65. I assumed the trend was a result of my generation being a bit heavier than the folks of my grandparents' time. I was right, in part. Obesity can trigger arthritis at an earlier age, which would cause a need for knee or hip surgery. On the other side of the spectrum, increased activity is contributing to the trend. There is a growing population of people with an abundantly active lifestyle. Many are choosing to have surgery earlier so they can get back to activity without a long lull for recovery time.

If you are contemplating surgery, knowing what to expect is important. There is some information online, but there is something to be said for face-to-face education from a medical provider. Asking your doctor is always a good idea. Another great resource in this area is that Pinnacle Physical Therapy hosts a free monthly class geared toward educating the community on the process of having a total hip or knee replacement.

The class is held the third Tuesday of each month, and the next one is this Tuesday, April 19. It's open to anyone who is having, or inquiring about a joint replacement. To reserve a spot in the class, call (208) 777-4242. It will be held at 1590 E. Polston Ave. in Post Falls, directly across from Northwest Specialty Hospital.

No matter the reason for your surgery, getting the best results possible should be high on your list. Make sure you take time to get educated on the process so you can hit the ground running.
