Shredder help sought

| September 30, 2010 9:00 PM

A Coeur d'Alene do-gooder is asking folks to chip in for a shredder.

Hank Stelzer, the owner and director of a private orphanage in South Africa, is requesting donations to purchase a shredder/chipper he will bring on his trip to Africa next month.

The shredder would be of great benefit to farmers in his orphanage's village, Stelzer said, where many harvest corn.

Natives could use the shredder to turn leftover corn stalks into livestock fodder, he said.

"Feed is in short supply," Stelzer said, adding that the shredder would be available to any villagers who couldn't afford such equipment. "Right now, they plow it (corn stalks) under, and that takes years to decompose. Whereas if they feed it to cattle and chickens, that puts it out of the fields right away."

The shredder is estimated to cost between $3,200 and $4,000, he said.

Folks can donate to the orphanage account at the Public Employees Credit Union, 1410 North Government Way in Coeur d'Alene.

They can also make a donation to Stelzer by calling 665-1451.
