John Haskew, 91

John Buchanon Haskew was born May 19, 1919, in Hollis, Okla. He was the youngest of five children born to John Bester Haskew and Willie N. ‘Sophie' Soles. He passed away on Monday, Sept. 20, 2010, at the Creekside Inn Assisted Living Center in Coeur d'Alene.

John married Lula Mae ‘Lu' Self of Thomas, Okla., on Feb. 8, 1942, in Wichita, Kan. They celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary in February 2009. Lu died the following November.

John was active in sports in high school and college, excelling in football and boxing. He graduated from Southwestern Oklahoma State University and was a member of the football team. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps during World War II and became an air traffic controller (ATC) serving in the European theater. Following the war, John became an air traffic controller for the federal government with that agency now the FAA. Stints as an ATC included Wichita, Albuquerque, Cheyenne, Salt Lake City, Denver and the Regional Center in Longmont. John was a resident of Loveland, Colo., for over 30 years. He was an avid fisherman and gardener. His yard was always bright, colorful and beautiful with an array of flowers and plants. Other hobbies included bird watching, restoring old cars, stamp collecting and coin collecting. Following the death of his wife, John moved to Coeur d'Alene.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Stella and Velma; brothers, Curtis and O.D.; wife Lu and great-granddaughter Kaylee Lewis.

He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Karen Haskew of Hayden, ID; son, Denny Haskew of Loveland, Colo.; extended family of Nelson Taylor, Astoria, Ore., and Pat and Richard Hall, Tulsa, Okla.; granddaughters, Stacy, Kellie and Brigette; grandsons, Greg and Patrick; seven great-granddaughters, seven great-grandsons; one great-great granddaughter and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A celebration of John's life will be held was held Saturday, Oct. 2, 2010, in the Columbine Gallery Garden in Loveland, Colo. Another celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, 2010, in Post Falls at River of Life Friends Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in honor of John to a hospice of your choice.
