TWIN FALLS - Tina Strahinic had 16 kills and 20 digs for the 17th-ranked North Idaho Cardinals in a 25-21, 25-14, 16-25, 25-14 win over the No. 7 Southern Idaho Golden Eagles in the Scenic West Athletic Conference opener for both on Saturday.

"This was a great win for us to start the conference season," NIC coach Colleen Frohlich said. "Hopefully we'll build some momentum and keep going from this."

Fei Gao, returning after spraining her ankle in the first game, finished with 11 kills for NIC (15-5), which travels to Eastern Utah on Friday.

"When she went down, the girls never gave up," Frohlich said. "We had a gameplan and stuck to it. I was real proud of the way our girls played. We knew what they wanted to do on the attack and took them out of it."

Gabriella Rifilato had 23 assists, Danielle Hodge had 10 kills and five blocks, Kaylee Ponce had 10 kills and Brenna Peterson had 16 assists for NIC.

"Everyone played huge for us tonight," Frohlich said. "I thought our setters did a great job of getting the ball where they needed to and helped control the match from start to finish."
