Late TD lifts Miners past Knights

| September 25, 2010 9:00 PM

FOOTBALL

PLUMMER — Gavin Rasmussen scored on a 5-yard touchdown run and rushed in the 2-point conversion with 53 seconds remaining and the Wallace Miners rallied past the Lakeside Knights 42-40 in North Star League play Friday night.

Lakeside (2-2, 2-2) used 3-yard touchdown runs from Lamont Higgins and Tyler McCully with less than two minutes remaining in the second quarter to take a 20-6 halftime lead.

The Miners caught their break when the Knights lost two-way starter McCully in the third quarter to a concussion and two-way starter Garth Dole in the fourth quarter to a stinger.

“We became shorthanded on both sides and that allowed Wallace to get back into the game,” Lakeside coach Ron Miller said. “Our kids still fought through it and our backups played well. I’m so proud of our guys and we played more than well enough to win.”

Higgins caught a 3-yard touchdown pass from Tucker Louie-McGee with 3:36 remaining to give Lakeside a 40-34 lead. The Knights’ final drive ended when Wallace recovered a botched snap with 20 seconds remaining.

The win gave Wallace (4-0, 4-0) the upper hand in the battle for the league’s one berth to the state 1A Division I playoffs. Wallace can clinch a playoff berth when the teams meet Oct. 29 at Wallace.

“The kids who haven’t played much stepped in and made it a fight until the end,” Miller said. “This had all the elements of a great football game — it was everything you could want.”

Lakeside hosts Clear-water Valley next Friday.
