Cardinals win home opener

COEUR d’ALENE —

Tina Strahinic and Fei Gao had 15 kills apiece for the North Idaho Cardinals in a 23-25, 25-19, 25-22, 25-23 nonconference home-opening win over the Spokane All-Stars on Wednesday at Christianson Gymnasium.

“It was a fun match,” NIC coach Colleen Frohlich said. “It was nice to be home and in front of our crowd. We came out with some nerves, but rebounded well. It was a good test going into our first conference weekend.”

Gabriella Rifilato had 25 assists and three aces, Kyona Hunt added eight digs, Kaylee Ponce recorded 10 kills and seven digs and Brenna Peterson 27 assists and five digs for No. 17 NIC (14-5), which travels to seventh-ranked Southern Idaho to open Scenic West Conference play on Saturday.

“We’re back on the road, but excited to get conference on the way,” Frohlich said.

ST. MARIES — Austin Cordell and Ryan Kennelly had first half goals for the Lumberjacks in a nonleague win over the Lake City JV.

“It was good to finally win a game,” St. Maries coach Chris Renaldo said. “We played well and have been playing them (Lake City) for 10 years and it was only the second time we’ve beat them.”

Bryan Jensen had two assists for St. Maries (2-6-3), which travels to Bonners Ferry on Saturday.

Christian Guzman scored an unassisted goal in the second half for Lake City.

Whitney Wood and Emily Corden had second half goals for Coeur d’Alene (5-4-1), which travels to Lewiston on Saturday.

Meghan Pagano had two assists for Sandpoint (3-6-4), which travels to Lake City on Saturday.

Sandpoint sweeps Post Falls in dual

SANDPOINT — Anastasia de Tar won both the 200 and 400 freestyle for the Trojans in a nonleague dual with Sandpoint at the Sandpoint West Athletic Club.

Sandpoint swept the team scores 63-19 in the boys and 58-33 in the girls events.

Post Falls travels to the Clarkston Aquatic Center on Saturday for the Lewiston Invitational.
