Late TD lifts Arizona past Iowa

Nick Foles hit William Wright with a late 4-yard touchdown pass and No. 24 Arizona held its ground in the national spotlight with a momentum-swinging 34-27 win over ninth-ranked Iowa on Saturday night at Tucson, Ariz.

Arizona (3-0) jumped out to a 20-point halftime lead behind a slew of big plays that included a blocked punt, Travis Cobb's 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and an interception returned 85 yards by Trevin Wade for another score.

Iowa (2-1) rallied behind its defense in the second half, grinding the Wildcats' offense to a halt to set up two of Ricky Stanzi's three touchdown passes.

The Hawkeyes had a chance at the lead midway through the fourth quarter when defensive tackle Broderick Binns returned an interception 20 yards for a touchdown, but Trent Mossbrucker's extra point was partially blocked, leaving the score at 27-all.

No. 1 Alabama 62, Duke 13: At Durham, N.C., Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram rushed for 151 yards and two touchdowns in his season debut, and Alabama (3-0) routed Duke (1-2) in its highest-scoring game in 19 years.

No. 3 Boise State 51, Wyoming 6: At Laramie, Wyo., Kellen Moore threw for 370 yards and two touchdowns, Boise State's defense forced three turnovers and the Broncos (2-0) extended their winning streak to 16 with a victory against Wyoming (1-2).

No. 4 TCU 45, Baylor 10: At Fort Worth, Texas, Ed Wesley ran 19 times for 165 yards and two touchdowns, Andy Dalton completed 21 of 23 passes for 267 yards with two scores and TCU (3-0)stretched its home winning streak to 16 games with a victory over the Bears (2-1).

No. 5 Oregon 69, Portland State 0: At Eugene, Ore., LaMichael James ran for 227 yards on 14 carries with two touchdowns and Oregon (3-0) easily defeated Portland State (2-1) in the Ducks' final tune-up before the start of Pac-10 play.

No. 6 Texas 24, Texas Tech 14: At Lubbock, Texas, Garrett Gilbert threw for two touchdowns and 227 yards to lead the Longhorns (3-0, 1-0 Big 12) past Texas Tech (2-1, 0-1).

No. 7 Oklahoma 27, Air Force 24: At Norman, Okla., DeMarco Murray gained a total of 148 yards and scored three touchdowns to help Oklahoma (3-0) hold off a late charge from Air Force's overpowering run game to beat the Falcons (2-1).

No. 8 Nebraska 56, Washington 21: At Seattle, Taylor Martinez ran for 137 yards and three touchdowns, threw for another 150 yards and a score and Nebraska (3-0) routed Washington (1-2).

No. 10 Florida 31, Tennessee 17: At Knoxville, Tenn., Mike Gillislee ran for two touchdowns and Florida (3-0, 1-0 Southeastern Conference) beat Tennessee (1-2, 0-1).

No. 11 Wisconsin 20, Arizona State 19: At Madison, Wis., Wisconsin's Jay Valai blocked a game-tying extra point try and the Badgers (3-0) held off Arizona State (2-1).

No. 12 Arkansas 31, Georgia 24: At Athens, Ga., Ryan Mallett threw a 40-yard scoring pass to Greg Childs with 15 seconds remaining and Arkansas (3-0, 1-0 SEC) picked up a huge win on the road after blowing a two-touchdown lead, beating Georgia (1-2, 0-2).

No. 13 South Carolina 38, Furman 19: At Columbia, S.C., Stephen Garcia threw two touchdown passes as South Carolina (3-0) beat lower-division Furman (1-1).

No. 14 Utah 56, New Mexico 14: At Albuquerque, N.M., Shaky Smith went untouched on a 73-yard punt return touchdown, capping a surge of three touchdowns in a span of 4:16 for Utah (3-0, 2-0 Mountain West Conference) in a victory over New Mexico (0-3, 0-1).

No. 15 LSU 29, Mississippi State 7: At Baton Rouge, La., Josh Jasper set an LSU (3-0, 2-0 SEC) record with five field goals, and the Tigers' defense had five interceptions in a victory over Mississippi State (1-2, 0-2).

No. 16 Auburn 27, Clemson 24, OT: At Auburn, Ala., Auburn's (3-0) Wes Byrum kicked a 39-yard field goal in overtime and Clemson's (2-1) Chandler Catanzaro missed a do-over kick to tie.

No. 18 Southern California 32, Minnesota 21: At Minneapolis, Robert Woods returned a kick 97 yards for a touchdown to jumpstart USC's sluggish offense and the Trojans (3-0) pulled away for a victory over Minnesota (1-2).

No. 20 Michigan 42, Massachusetts 37: At Ann Arbor, Mich., Denard Robinson accounted for 345 yards and three touchdowns to help Michigan (3-0) overcome its poor defense to beat Massachusetts (2-1).

No. 21 West Virginia 31, Maryland 17: At Morgantown, W.Va., Geno Smith threw four touchdown passes, Noel Devine rushed for a season-high 131 yards and West Virginia (3-0) beat Maryland (2-1).

No. 22 Penn State 24, Kent State 0: At State College, Pa., Evan Royster and freshman quarterback Rob Bolden each ran for first-quarter touchdowns, and the Penn State (2-1) defense capitalized on quarterback Spencer Keith's shaky performance in a win over Kent State (1-2).

UCLA 31, No. 23 Houston 13: At Pasadena, Calif., Johnathan Franklin rushed for 158 yards and three touchdowns, and UCLA (1-2) rolled to a victory over Houston (2-1), which lost star quarterback Case Keenum to an injury for the second straight week.

No. 25 Oregon State 35, Louisville 28: At Corvallis, Ore., Jacquizz Rodgers ran for 132 yards and two touchdowns and James Dockery sealed the game with an interception for Oregon State (1-1) in a win over the Cardinals (1-2).

Colorado 31, Hawaii 13: At Boulder, Colo., Rodney Stewart rushed for two touchdowns and Tyler Hansen hooked up with Toney Clemons on a 73-yard touchdown toss as Colorado (2-1) overcame a sluggish start to beat Hawaii (1-2).

Fresno State 41, Utah State 24: At Logan, Utah, A.J. Ellis ran for 165 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead Fresno State (2-0, 1-0 Western Athletic Conference) past Utah State (1-2, 0-1).

San Jose State 16, Southern Utah 11: At San Jose, Calif., Lamon Muldrow's 6-yard touchdown run with 1:10 remaining lifted San Jose State (1-2) past Southern Utah (1-2).

UTEP 42, New Mexico State 10: At El Paso, Texas, Trevor Vittatoe threw five touchdown passes and UTEP (2-1) routed New Mexico State (0-2).

Navy 37, Louisiana Tech 23: At Ruston, La., Ricky Dobbs had a career day as a passer and Navy's option attack provided three second-half touchdowns to help the Midshipmen (2-1) rally past Louisiana Tech (1-2).

Northern Colorado 35, Idaho State 21: At Greeley, Colo., Dylan Orms threw two touchdown passes and ran for two more scores to lead Northern Colorado (2-1, 1-1 Big Sky) past Idaho State (1-2, 0-1).

Redlands 23, Whitworth 7: At Redlands, Calif., D. Selway threw for 214 yards and three touchdowns and Redlands (2-0) defeated Whitworth (1-2).

Former Lakeland High standout Scott Carr had six tackles for Whitworth.
