HISSONG: Top coroner candidate

| September 19, 2010 10:00 PM

I attended a fundraiser for Jody DeLuca Hissong recently. Jody is running on the Democratic ticket for Kootenai County Coroner.

I have known Jody, as a friend, for more than 10 years and have learned that she is dedicated to her job in the coroner's office. She has worked as deputy coroner and chief deputy coroner for almost three decades. During that time she has visited hundreds of scenes and written more than 800 death certificates. She takes her duties in that role very seriously, being thorough, efficient and decisive. In addition to her duties in her work, Jody has been a tireless volunteer and caregiver, dedicated to the betterment of our community. Her experience speaks for itself, and I knew enough before going to the event to vote for her.

But I learned even more from other people that were there Thursday night. Present were representatives of the law, medical and funeral home communities who have worked with Jody over the years. They were there to endorse her and tell the rest of us how they appreciated the work that Jody does. They talked about her frugality, (she cares about saving the taxpayers' money!), honesty, expedience, the feeling of confidence and relief they have when they know Jody is the attending coroner, and also testified that she is a compassionate advocate for the families with whom she works. Their testimonies solidified to me that her knowledge, professionalism and financial prudence will be an asset to our county.

Jody will be on the ballot in November as a Democrat. However I feel it is important to remind you that there is nothing "democratic" or "republican" about this office. I urge all of you to learn about your candidates, and vote in November. And if you do your homework regarding the coroner's position I think you will come to the same conclusion that I have - that Jody is the most qualified and very deserving of your vote.
