Joe Torre never got the Los Angeles Dodgers to the heights his Yankees once reached, and now the veteran manager is moving on.

Torre said Friday he will retire after his third season with the Dodgers, and Los Angeles immediately announced hitting coach Don Mattingly will replace him in 2011.

Torre took over the Dodgers before the 2008 season after 12 successful years and four World Series titles with the New York Yankees. Although he revitalized the Dodgers while making the playoffs twice during his relatively brief stint in Hollywood, he never matched his success in the Bronx.

Braves 6, Mets 4: Jason Heyward hit a three-run homer and Atlanta won at New York.

Rockies 7, Dodgers 5: Ubaldo Jimenez earned his 19th victory, leading Colorado at Los Angeles.

Cubs 2, Marlins 0: At Miami, Ryan Dempster pitched seven crisp innings and Chicago beat Florida.

Phillies 9, Nationals 1: Roy Oswalt threw six sharp innings to lead Philadelphia past visiting Washington.

Astros 5, Reds 3: Angel Sanchez hit a tiebreaking two-run single in the seventh and host Houston beat Cincinnati.

Football

Colin Kaepernick ran for 148 yards and three touchdowns and passed for 181 yards and two more scores to help keep Nevada (3-0) unbeaten with a 52-31 victory over California (2-1) at Reno, Nev.

Georgia will have to play two more games without star receiver A.J. Green.

The NCAA turned down his appeal, letting stand the four-game suspension Green received for selling an Independence Bowl jersey for $1,000 to a person deemed to be an agent.

Peter Tomasulo fired an 8-under 63 and moved into the lead at the halfway point of the Albertsons Boise Open.

Tomasulo matched the tournament’s 36-hole record with his 14-under 128 total and leads by two over Michael Putnam.

Auto Racing

Brad Keselowski crashed the party at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon, N.H., winning the pole for Sunday’s Sylvania 300, the first race in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup championship.
