Thompson to speak to NIC boosters

COEUR d'ALENE - New North Idaho College head golf coach Derrick Thompson will be the featured speaker at today's Booster Club luncheon at noon at the Coeur d'Alene Outback Steakhouse. Thompson enters his first season as head men's and women's golf coach, after serving as an assistant coach for two years. He replaces Randy Boswell, who resigned as head coach in June but will remain on the staff as an assistant.

Thompson has been a golf professional since 2006 and worked at The Coeur d'Alene Resort Golf Course as an assistant professional from 2006 to 2007. He is currently entering his fourth year at Avondale Golf Club as an assistant professional. Thompson graduated from Ferndale (Wash.) High in 2000 and attended Western Washington University in Bellingham.The NIC Booster club meets the second and last Tuesday of each month.

Volleyball for the Cure is tonight

POST FALLS - Coeur d'Alene visits Post Falls tonight for Volleyball for the Cure matches to benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation and local families fighting women's cancers.

The teams wear pink and the games are played with pink volleyballs. Raffle prizes will be available and so far to date the matches have raised $11,000.

Freshman games will start at 4:15 p.m., junior varsity is at 5:30 and the varsity match will be at 7 p.m.

WAC players of the week awarded

DENVER - Hawaii quarterback Bryant Moniz, Nevada linebacker James-Michael Johnson and Nevada place kicker Anthony Martinez were named the Verizon Western Athletic Conference offensive, defensive and special teams players of the week, respectively.Moniz, a junior from Wahiawa, Oahu (Fresno City College), completed 25 of 36 passes for 343 yards and three touchdowns in a 31-28 win at Army.

Johnson, a junior from Suisun, Calif. (Rodriguez HS), had a team-high nine tackles, including 1.5 sacks for a loss of 11 yards, in Nevada's 51-6 win at Colorado State. Martinez, a freshman from Reno, Nev. (McQueen HS), made all three of his field goals and connected on all six extra point attempts in the win over Colorado State.
