Recalling 9/11 Nine Years Later

| September 8, 2010 5:15 AM

Saturday marks the 9th anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, which claimed nearly 3,000 lives. Once again a program will be held at American Legion Post 143 to pay tribute to the men and women who bravely served as first responders on that horrible day in our nation’s history. The public is invited to attend, beginning at 1 p.m. at the post on Poleline and Syringa in Post Falls. The Air National Guard Band will also perform.

In addition to the first responders who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001, the flight crews of American Airlines Flights 11 and 77, and United Airlines Flights 175 and 93, spent their final moments comforting and protecting their passengers during the hijackings. Thirty-three pilots and flight attendants died that day.

It’s my heartfelt hope that we as American citizens never forget the attacks nor the men and women of our Armed Forces who continue to be in harm’s way as they fight for freedom a world away.

The Rathdrum Lions Club drew the winning ticket for the 1964 1/2 Mustang on Labor Day and the winner is Donna Marcy. Dorie Rusk and Kathy Hauk won $100 and $50, respectively, for being present when their tickets were drawn.

On Labor Day a young bull moose was out and about on Ohio Match Road in Post Falls, drawing lots of spectators. Jeanne Hayes saw the moose from her balcony deck and opened her back gate so he could come eat his fill from fallen apples in their yard. While Jeanne watched from the safety of her balcony, the moose meandered into the backyard for brunch before wandering out again to visit the neighbors. Jeanne and Cliff have lived in their Pinevilla 1 home, just east of Ross Point Road for 28 years and this is only the second time a moose has come a calling.

A fun piece of trivia while chatting with Nancy Jessick Edinger recently. Her Coeur d’Alene High School Class of 1957 was the first to graduate from what she refers to as the “new” high school. My CHS Class of 1970 was the last class to graduate from what we refer to as the “old” high school. We’re talking about the same school which is now Lakes Middle School on 15th Street, which hasn’t been a high school for four decades.

J.D. Dickinson has surely set a record of some sort after attending the Willy Nelson concert in Boise last night. It’s the 44th concert of the country legend J.D. has seen.
