Post Falls topples Lake City in 5A Inland Empire League opener

COEUR d'ALENE - Sierra Monti had 11 kills as the Post Falls Trojans defeated Lake City 21-25, 25-17, 25-20, 27-25 in the 5A Inland Empire League opener for both at Lake City High.

"We put up a great fight tonight," Lake City assistant coach Laura Tolzmann said. "Both teams played really hard."

Tori Bertsch had 18 assists and Savannah Hill 10 digs for Post Falls (10-0), which hosts Lewiston on Thursday at the Arena.

Camille Rounds had 25 assists and Jennifer Schuman 18 kills for Lake City (0-2), which travels to Coeur d'Alene on Thursday.

Coeur d'Alene

COEUR d'ALENE - Sam Buratto had 11 kills as the Sandpoint Bulldogs defeated the Coeur d'Alene Vikings 25-23, 25-18, 25-19 in a nonleague match at Elmer Jordan Court.

"I thought it was a good match," said Coeur d'Alene coach Carly Curtis, whose team is still missing starters Kylie Curtis and Maddy Seaman due to injuries. "Our girls stepped up and competed. We're fairly young this season, so hopefully we'll get better as the season goes on. It was a hard-fought battle tonight."

Blake Plaster had 23 digs, Ariel Moe 12 assists and Alex Bucholtz three digs for Sandpoint (1-1), which travels to Moscow on Thursday.

Ashley Hammons had 10 assists and three aces, Kayla McGlathery had five kills and four blocks and Amy Norris 17 assists for Coeur d'Alene (5-3), which hosts Lake City on Thursday.

Kootenai

PLUMMER - Joelle Miller had 10 kills and four blocks as the Knights defeated the Warriors 25-16, 25-10, 25-9 in the season and North Star League opener for both.

"I wanted them to play hard and stay focused tonight," Lakeside coach Jan Mitchell said. "We've still got some little things to work on, but we hustled and played well as a team. It was a good all-around match tonight."

Jennifer Mitchell had 18 assists and seven aces and Maria Garcia had six digs and four kills for Lakeside, which hosts Wallace on Thursday.

Olivia Kincheloe had six digs and two kills for Kootenai, which hosts Clark Fork on Thursday.

Cd'A Charter

COEUR d'ALENE - Emily Verhaeghe had 12 assists and seven digs for the Panthers in a 25-14, 25-8, 25-12 loss to the Wildcats in a nonleague match at Holy Family Catholic School.

"They were some real scrappy games," Coeur d'Alene Charter coach Chris Smith said. "We're really starting to come together as a team. Once they realize they can win, we'll start winning some of these matches."

Breanna Marshall had 30 assists for Coeur d'Alene Charter (0-3), which travels to Mullan on Thursday.

RATHDRUM - Shane Stanley scored two goals to lift the visiting Bulldogs past the Hawks in a 4A Inland Empire League match at Corbit Field.

"The first half was the best we've played all year," Lakeland coach Nick Haynes said. "We did a good job of containing Tanner (Williams) and it was a pretty evenly played match. We kind of died off in the second half. Sandpoint is a good team, and we knew that coming in."

Sandpoint (5-2-1, 1-0 4A IEL) will host Post Falls on Thursday.

Chris Jackson had five saves for Lakeland (0-5, 0-2), which hosts Coeur d'Alene on Thursday.

POST FALLS - Freshman Timmy Mueller scored four goals as the Trojans defeated the Crusaders in a nonleague match.

"We played a solid 80 minutes," Post Falls coach Gabe Lawson said. "By halftime, the other team hadn't crossed midfield yet. It was an excellent display on how to possess and attack. It was an all-around good day of soccer."

Conner Kenna had one goal and two assists for Post Falls (3-1), which travels to Sandpoint on Thursday at 7 p.m.

"It took us a while to get going," Post Falls coach Becky Thompson said. "They are a very talented team. We played a lot stronger in the second half after we figured out what we needed to do. But the slow start definitely hurt us."

Hannah Slinkard had five saves for Post Falls (2-2-2), which travels to Ferris High in Spokane on Thursday.

SPIRIT LAKE - Kayla Bowers scored on an unassisted goal in the 62nd minute to give the Tigers a nonleague win over the Viking junior varsity.

"Our girls didn't play their normal game," Timberlake coach Steve Michael said. "Our goalkeeper Malin (Bergenholm) kept us in the game. They've got a good JV program with some smart players - we just had a better goalie today."

Bergenholm had six saves for Timberlake (3-1-2), which travels to St. Maries on Saturday.

Jayden Sanchez had nine saves for Coeur d'Alene.
