Kendrick Hugh Hayes, 93, passed away Saturday, Sept. 4, 2010, at Pinewood nursing home in Coeur d'Alene. Born Feb. 28, 1917, in Stratton, Ohio, to Ross and Birdie Hayes. Ken was one of seven children. All of Ken's brothers and sisters are deceased.

Ken met the love of his life, Evelyn Frandsen, while on leave in Coeur d'Alene during World War II. They were married shortly thereafter and when Ken returned at war's end, they made their home on Hastings Avenue in Coeur d'Alene in 1948, where Evelyn still lives today.

Ken was employed as an engineer for the General Telephone Company for 32 years, retiring in 1980. Prior to that, he served in the U.S. Army with the 440th Signal Battalion, spending three years in the South Pacific.

Ken is survived by his wife at home; sons and daughters-in-law James (Mary Jane) of Marysville, Wash., Martin (Lynn) of Spirit Lake and Phil (Mary) of Coeur d'Alene. He also had nine grandchildren (Jennifer Hayes, Matthew Hayes, Amy Hayes, Aryn Hayes, Ryan Hayes, Kenny Gossett, Bobbi Fuchs, Andrew Hayes and Marni Wilson) and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by infant son, Jon Howard Mathis Hayes.

Ken was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved to pick huckleberries. In fact, he often refused to leave the mountain until every berry was picked. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren who all love him dearly.

At Ken's request, no services will be held. Yates funeral Home has been entrusted with the care of final arrangements.
