Trojans beat Viks for Mariner title

EVERETT, Wash. - The Post Falls Trojans defeated the Coeur d'Alene Vikings 25-23, 25-19 to claim a second straight championship at the Mariner Invitational on Saturday at Mariner High.

"It was good for us and Coeur d'Alene to go 1-2 in the tournament," Post Falls coach Willow Hanna said. "They were cheering for us all day and we cheered for them. We served pretty well today and kept some of the other teams out of their systems."

In pool play, Post Falls defeated Mariner High 25-11, 26-24, Nathan Hale 25-10, 25-16, Cedar Crest 25-16, 25-16. In bracket play, Post Falls defeated Granite Falls 26-24, 25-12 and Kent-Meridian 28-26, 25-23.

Tori Bertsch had 42 assists and 20 aces, Ashley Jibby 21 kills and 11 digs and Sierra Monti 12 blocks and Savannah Hill 11 digs for Post Falls (9-0), which travels to Lake City on Tuesday.

In pool play, Coeur d'Alene defeated Shorewood 25-23, 26-24 split with Skyline 24-26, 25-20 and defeated Kent-Meridian 25-22, 26-24. In bracket play, Coeur d'Alene defeated Mountlake Terrace 22-25, 25-23, 15-10 and Shorecrest 18-25, 25-18, 15-9.

Ashley Hammons had 66 assists, Taylor Gould six aces, Anyssa Matheson 18 blocks and Amy Norris 48 digs and Demi Johnson 39 digs for Coeur d'Alene (5-2), which played without starters Maddy Seaman and Kylie Curtis, who were out due to injuries.

"We had a couple starters out and I was proud that our girls stepped up and did well," Coeur d'Alene coach Carly Curtis said.

Coeur d'Alene hosts Sandpoint on Tuesday.

MOSCOW - Michael Bender scored both goals for the Bears in the nonleague game.

Joel Wasserman scored an unassisted goal in the 76th minute for Coeur d'Alene (3-1-1), which travels to Lakeland on Thursday.

POST FALLS - Magi Munoz scored on a penalty kick in the 70th minute as the visiting Chiefs earned a tie with the Trojans in a nonleague match.

Aubree Mercier and Lexie Smith each had goals for Post Falls (2-1-2), which hosts Gonzaga Prep on Tuesday.

SPOKANE - Kendall Stratton and Nichole Pagano each scored their second goals in as many games, leading the Bulldogs (1-3-2) over Ferris at Joe Albi Stadium.

Alicia Fishvik scored in the 25th minute to give Ferris a 1-0 lead, before Stratton equalized in the 37th minute and Pagano nailed the game winner in the 75th minute.

Sandpoint is at Lakeland in a 4A Inland Empire League game Tuesday.
