Locker, Huskies fall short at BYU

Riley Nelson threw for two touchdowns in his first start in four years and BYU's defense shut out Washington in the second half as the Cougars (1-0) won 23-17 on Saturday at Provo, Utah.

Washington's Jake Locker passed for 266 yards, but missed passes on two fourth-down conversion attempts in the final period that could have put the Huskies ahead.

Nelson and Jake Heaps, who are sharing BYU's quarterback duties, both finished with 131 yards passing.

Locker threw for one touchdown and ran for another and Erik Folk kicked a career-best 54-yard field goal at the end of the second quarter to give the Huskies (0-1) a 17-13 lead.

Locker finished 20 of 37 for 266 yards with no interceptions, but could not quite get the Huskies in the end zone in the second half.

California 52, UC Davis 3: At Berkeley, Calif., Kevin Riley threw for 258 yards and three touchdowns in just more than a half of work, Jeff Tedford became California's winningest coach in the modern era and the Golden Bears (1-0) beat UC Davis (0-1) for a sixth win in their last seven season openers.

Shane Vereen ran for two scores and caught a touchdown pass, all in the first half. Freshman Keenan Allen ran 18 yards for a second-quarter touchdown, then caught a 48-yard TD pass from Riley to start Cal's second-half scoring.

Kansas State 31, UCLA 22: At Manhattan, Kan., Daniel Thomas rushed for 235 yards and two touchdowns and Kansas State (1-0) rallied past UCLA (0-1) before a crowd of 51,059, the biggest for a home opener in Wildcats' history.

There were three touchdowns in the final 123 seconds and Kansas State had two, including Thomas' 35-yard gallop after the Wildcats fell on UCLA's onside kick.

Stanford 52, Sacramento State 17: At Stanford, Calif., Andrew Luck threw a career-high four touchdown passes in helping Stanford (1-0) win its first game without Heisman Trophy runner-up Toby Gerhart, beating Sacramento State (0-1).

Luck completed 17 of 23 passes for 316 yards, including an 81-yard scoring toss to Doug Baldwin and a 59-yard touchdown to Stepfan Taylor. Luck also threw TD passes of 15 yards to Baldwin and 5 yards to Zach Ertz.

Arizona State 54, Portland State 9: At Tempe, Ariz., Cameron Marshall scored on three of his four first-half carries, and Arizona State (1-0) used its quick-hitting offense to overwhelm Portland State (0-1).

Louisiana Tech 20, Grambling State 6: At Shreveport, La., Myke Compton rushed for two first-half touchdowns and Louisiana Tech (1-0) beat Grambling State (0-1) in the inaugural Port City Classic.

Fresno State 28, Cincinnati 14: At Fresno, Calif., Ryan Colburn matched his career high with four touchdown passes and Fresno State (1-0) overcame a slow start before snapping Cincinnati's (0-1) 18-game regular-season winning streak.
