Cardinal women open own tourney with win

WOMEN'S SOCCER

COEUR d'ALENE - Forward Demi Wignot scored two goals in the second half to lift the North Idaho Cardinals past Chemeketa Community College of Salem, Ore., 4-3 in the Cardinal Classic at Eisenwinter Field.

"We actually played pretty well," NIC coach Dan Hogan said. "Then we had moments when we gave up the last two goals. We relaxed too much, but I was real happy with how we competed."

Kristin DeCroix had a goal and assist for NIC (2-1), which faces Treasure Valley today at 2:30 p.m. Treasure Valley defeated Salt Lake 1-0 earlier Saturday.

COEUR d'ALENE - Luis Echeverria and Felipe Herrida scored two goals apiece as the Storm defeated the Cardinals in the Cardinal Classic at Eisenwinter Field.

Ethan Olson evened the match at 2 for NIC (1-1-1) in the 53rd minute on an unassisted goal.

"We worked hard to come back to tie it," NIC coach Scott Moorcroft said. "We felt like we had control of the game. Really everyone felt we'd get a third goal. We're a little bit disappointed on how we finished."

NIC takes on Treasure Valley today at 4:30 p.m. Treasure Valley lost to Laramie County 5-2 earlier Saturday.

NIC splits, goes

2-2 at tourney

SALT LAKE CITY - The Cardinals, ranked 11th in the NJCAA, defeated Western Arizona 25-14, 25-20, 25-20 and lost to Northeastern Junior College 25-20, 28-26, 26-24 to conclude play with a 2-2 record at the Marriott Residence Inn Invitational.

Tina Strahinic had 43 kills in the two matches for NIC (5-4). Gabriella Rifalato had 48 assists. Esther Timofeyev, who stepped in for the injured Fei Gao, had seven kills and 10 digs vs. Western Arizona.

Kaylee Ponce had nine kills in the first match, 17 digs in the second.

NIC rested Gao, a right side/outside hitter, throughout the tourney due to leg injuries. Frohlich said Gao probably won't play this Friday and Saturday, when NIC competes at the Inland Northwest Communications tournament in Spokane.
