COEUR d'ALENE - Both the Lake City Timberwolves and Mountain View Mavericks had momentum at some point after the opening kick, but it was the visiting Mavericks who held it last in a 27-20 win on Friday at Lake City High.

Mountain View freshman quarterback Kai Turner completed 13 of 21 passes for 218 yards and two touchdowns, both coming in the second half.

"We found out a month before the season that Kai was going to be our starting quarterback," Mountain View coach Judd Benedick said. "Our three-year starter opted to play basketball only. He kind of struggled early, but this was his first big game."

Turner had two interceptions in the first half as the Timberwolves built a 7-6 halftime lead. The freshman went 7 for 10 for 151 yards in the second half, with an interception return for a touchdown by Lake City safety Dylan Eastin the only mistake as the Mavericks scored 21 unanswered points in the half.

"That's a lot to ask a kid to get onto a bus and ride eight hours and lead your team against a program like Lake City," Benedick said. "He just kept battling. He's a heady player and will make the big plays when the game is on the line."

Mountain View's Michael Ho-Lewis had 15 carries for 100 yards, including a 9-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

"Michael's really all we had coming back this season," Benedick said. "He kept us going early on tonight and did a good job taking some of the pressure off Kai in the first half. Lake City is pretty dang good. They put a lot of pressure on and when they got into something, they'd throw a changeup. They're pretty talented and well-coached."

Lake City lost senior running back Jacob Bowman to a knee injury on their second possession of the game.

"We're going to have to adapt because it looks fairly serious," Lake City coach Van Troxel said. "(Levi) Hewitt made some nice plays - but they were called back due to penalties."

Allen Carmichael had 21 carries for 74 yards and two touchdowns for Lake City.

"We still have a chance to be a good team," Troxel said. "Hopefully they'll learn from this and get better from these things."

Lake City had chances late in the fourth quarter, getting into Maverick territory on a 50-yard pass from Mark Smyly to Colton Carlson with under four minutes to go. Lake City could not move the ball on fourth down as Smyly was sacked on fourth and 5 to give the ball back on downs.

After a three-and-out on defense, Lake City faced another fourth down and could not convert with 40 seconds remaining as Richie Childers was tackled short of the first down marker.

"It was a good ball game," Troxel said. "We missed some tackles, missed some blocks, but we'll learn from this and get better. It just looked like we didn't make the improvement from Week 1 to Week 2."

Lake City travels to Capital (Boise) on Friday at 6 p.m. The game will also be webcast on www.idahosports.com.
