| September 4, 2010 9:00 PM

ST. MARIES -Forest Service firefighters in the St. Joe River Ranger District are still controlling several small blazes.

On the St. Joe River Ranger District, five fires have been managed for resource benefit and range in size from one tenth of an acre up to 272 acres.

The largest fire is named the Sawtooth Fire and marks the first time a resource benefit fire that started on national forest system lands was allowed to spread onto state lands in the Snowpeak Wildlife Management Area without being suppressed.

Firefighters have responded to 10 new fires since the last cold front passed through on Aug. 26. The new fires were sparked by lightning and ranged up to four acres in size. All of the new fires have been extinguished.
