Police watching when school resumes

| September 2, 2010 4:00 AM

September brings busy, back to school activities for area communities. The most noticeable change is the mass of students utilizing area sidewalks, and crosswalks as they make their way to attend the first day of school.

Area law enforcement agencies will be out in force to ensure drivers are complying with school zone requirements, and pedestrian crosswalks.

There will be a multi-agency effort beginning Tuesday September 7th at 7:30am. Law Enforcement officers from the Coeur d’Alene Police Department, Post Falls Police, Kootenai County Sheriff’s Department, Idaho State Police, City of Hayden Lake Police, Rathdrum Police, Spirit Lake Police, and the Coeur d’Alene Tribal Police will meet at the Coeur d’Alene Police Department at 3818 Schreiber Way. The Coeur d’Alene Fire Department will also be present, and assist children through the crosswalks located near area schools.

Chief Wayne Longo as well as other agency leaders will make a few brief statements regarding the importance of driver awareness and responsibility in school zones.

The officers will then deploy to the various schools in all of the surrounding communities and monitor the school zones for compliance.

Area law enforcement agencies are committed to the enforcement of state laws, and driver education practices in order to keep the children in our communities’ safe as they walk to and from school.
