Cardinals win at nationals, play for fifth place today

VOLLEYBALL

WEST PLAINS, Mo. - Sophomore Tina Strahinic had 20 kills and 21 digs as the sixth-seeded North Idaho Cardinals defeated 10th-seeded Eastern Arizona 25-23, 24-26, 25-13, 22-25, 15-12 on Friday to advance to the fifth-sixth place game of the NJCAA tournament at Missouri State University.

"All of our sophomores played huge today," NIC coach Colleen Frohlich said. "The girls responded well after yesterday."

Kaylee Ponce had 13 kills, Esther Timofeyev had 12 kills and three blocks, Fei Gao 15 digs, Gabriela Rifilato 43 assists, Brenna Peterson 25 assists and Kyona Hunt 15 digs for NIC (28-7), which faces top-seeded Miami Dade College today at 12:30 p.m.

"They were undefeated prior to the tournament," Frohlich said of Miami Dade. "They're a very powerful, athletic team. We're going to take the attitude of putting it all out on the court and coming out a winner."

Salt Lake, the No. 8 seed from the Scenic West Athletic Conference, fell to fourth-seed Western Nebraska 27-25, 21-25, 25-23, 25-19 in a national semifinal and will play San Jacinto today for third place at 2:30 p.m.

WRESTLING

COEUR d'ALENE - Justin Korthius had two pins and a decision for the second-ranked Cardinals as they defeated Clackamas 40-12, Cerritos 28-17 and Yakima Valley 31-15 in the Cardinal Duals at Christianson Gymnasium.

"We're kind of beat up right now, but all teams are," NIC coach Pat Whitcomb said. "Marcel (Dubose) and Braden (Mowry) are going to be out this weekend to rest until after Thanksgiving. All in all, it's good to get a few wins and be able to throw some backups in there."

NIC will host the HUB Open today in Liberty Lake.

CASPER, Wyo. - Sophomore Kama Griffitts scored a game-high 19 points as 14th-ranked North Idaho defeated Casper College 68-56 in the Pizza Hut Women's Invitational Basketball Tournament.

Tugce Canitez had 18 points and eight rebounds for NIC (6-0), which faces Colby College today.
