Stanton P. Rines, 61

| November 11, 2010 11:44 AM

Stanton P. Rines passed away Oct. 25, 2010, in San Diego, Calif.

Born in Memphis, Tenn., Stan was schooled in Binghamton, N.Y., after which he graduated from Wannakeena School of Forestry in upstate New York. A tour of service in the U.S. Marine Corp. followed.

Upon discharge from the Corp. he returned to forestry which brought him to Idaho. He supported himself by logging while earning his undergraduate degree at the University of Idaho. He went on to obtain his law degree.

Stan's law career began in Kendrick. Later he relocated to Coeur d'Alene where he served as a public defender for Kootenai County. Eventually, the private sector captured his attention. He spent the last 10 years of practice dividing his time between Coeur d'Alene and Mexico. Sailing his boat "Sunset Breeze" brought many hours of joy to Stan as he explored the islands off the coast of Baja in the Sea of Cortez.

Friends and family remember Stan as an avid sailor, a loyal friend, a kind and generous man who loved to share his adventures with colleagues while simultaneously debating law and politics. Oftentimes those moments were accompanied by the voluminous tunes of "The Grateful Dead!"

Stan is survived by his mother, Elizabeth D. Rines; a sister, Beth Kaufman and her husband, Kelly; two nieces, Brienne DuPree and Dr. Brittany Kaufman, all of Gainesville, Ga. His first mate, Val Benecke resides in Coeur d'Alene.

Private services were held on Veteran's Day, Nov. 11, 2010, in Gainesville, Ga.

Spread your wings Sunset Breeze

stir the dreams of those

Left earth-bound on a distant shore

Bereft

Proud
