Veterans Day events

Several events are scheduled throughout Kootenai County today and Thursday to honor area veterans.

Veterans Day is Thursday.

Applebee's in Coeur d'Alene will offer a free meal to veterans on Thursday. A free dinner with entertainment will be held at the Coeur d'Alene Casino at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Here are some of the public ceremonies by city:

• Hayden - A Veterans Day ceremony will be held on Thursday at 10 a.m. Government Way will be closed from Orchard Avenue to Honeysuckle from 9:45 a.m. to 11 a.m. and reopened after the ceremony.

• Coeur d'Alene - A ceremony hosted by American Legion Post 14 and assisted by Veterans of Foreign Wars 889 will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at the bell on Third Street on the east side of The Coeur d'Alene Resort.

Jim Shepperd of the VFW will ring the bell 11 times on Nov. 11 as he has done for several years in recognition of Armistice Day, also known as Remembrance Day, which commemorates the armistice signed between the allies of World War I and Germany at France in 1918.

School assemblies today include: Atlas Elementary, 2:15 p.m.; Bryan Elementary, 9:30 a.m.; Coeur d'Alene High, 9 a.m.; Dalton Elementary, 9:15 a.m.; Hayden Kinder Care, 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.; and Hayden Meadows Elementary, 2:15 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

• Post Falls - Local veterans are invited to breakfast at 7:30 a.m. today at Post Falls High.

There will be school assemblies today at 8:55 a.m. at River City Middle School, 9 a.m. at Ponderosa Elementary, 11 a.m. at Mullan Trail Elementary, 1:15 p.m. at Seltice Elementary and at 1:25 p.m. at Post Falls Middle School. The assemblies will feature speeches, music and students honoring veterans. The public is invited.

Rep. Frank Henderson, R-Post Falls, will speak at River City, while Mayor Clay Larkin will speak at Ponderosa and Post Falls Middle School.

There will also be a musical at West Ridge Elementary today at 1 p.m.

• Rathdrum - There will be several speakers at a ceremony at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Pinegrove Cemetery. New this year will be flags along the main entrance to the cemetery.

School assemblies in the Lakeland School District include: today, Athol Elementary, 9 a.m., Spirit Lake Elementary, 1:30 p.m., and Twin Lakes Elementary, 10:30 a.m.; Thursday, Betty Keifer Elementary, 1 p.m., Garwood Elementary, 1:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
