Events set to honor veterans

Several events are scheduled throughout Kootenai County to honor area veterans, starting with a parade on Saturday in Hayden.

Veterans Day is Thursday.

Hayden's fourth annual Veterans Parade starts at 10 a.m. and runs south on Government Way from Hayden Avenue to Honeysuckle.

Dorothy Tarleton will be the grand marshal of the parade. She will be honored as the 2010 Distinguished Veteran of the Year at Hayden City Hall after the parade. Tarleton, a combat nurse during World War II, served in the Pacific Theater from July 1945 to February 1946. She was awarded the Asia Pacific Theater Ribbon, the American Theater Ribbon, the Victory Ribbon and an Overseas Service Bar. She has lived in the Hayden Lake area more than 30 years.

Government Way will be closed for the parade from 9:45 to 11 a.m.

Hayden also holds a Veterans Day ceremony at 10 a.m. Thursday. Government Way will be closed from Orchard Avenue to Honeysuckle from 9:45 to 11 a.m.

Applebee's in Coeur d'Alene will offer a free meal to veterans on Thursday.

A free dinner with entertainment will be held at the Coeur d'Alene Casino at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Public events honoring area veterans:

* Coeur d'Alene - A ceremony hosted by American Legion Post 14 and assisted by Veterans of Foreign Wars 889 will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the bell on Third Street on the east side of The Coeur d'Alene Resort.

The Marine Corps League Pappy Boyington Detachment 966 will hold a ceremony at Coeur d'Alene Memorial Gardens Cemetery at 2 p.m.

Tuesday's school assemblies include: Borah Elementary, 2:40 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.; Fernan Elementary, 9:30 a.m.; and Ramsey Magnet, 6:30 p.m.

School assemblies on Wednesday include: Atlas Elementary, 2:15 p.m.; Bryan Elementary, 9:30 a.m.; Coeur d'Alene High, 9 a.m.; Dalton Elementary, 9:15 a.m.; Hayden Kinder Care, 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.; and Hayden Meadows Elementary, 2:15 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

* Post Falls - Local veterans are invited to breakfast at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday at Post Falls High.

There will be school assemblies at 8:45 a.m. at River City Middle School; 9 a.m. at Ponderosa Elementary; and at 1 p.m. at Post Falls Middle School. The assemblies will feature speeches, music and students honoring veterans. The public is invited.

There will also be an assembly at Prairie View Elementary at 2:15 p.m. Tuesday, and at West Ridge Elementary on Wednesday at 1 p.m.

* Rathdrum - There will be several speakers at a ceremony at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Pinegrove Cemetery.

School assemblies in the Lakeland School District include: Wednesday, Athol Elementary, 9 a.m., Spirit Lake Elementary, 1:30 p.m., and Twin Lakes Elementary, 10:30 a.m.; Thursday, Betty Keifer Elementary, 1 p.m., Garwood Elementary, 1:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
