HUNTING: Photos part of the story

| November 3, 2010 9:09 AM

I enjoy reading The Press, not all of it, but some of the sections. I like how The Press is divided into sections for everyone who enjoy and are interested in "Sports," "Local," "Lifestyles," "North Idaho Life," "Classified," "Homes," "Business" ... This makes it convenient for all who receive The Press to have quick and easy access to the sections that are of interest to them. All the other sections that are not of interest can be set aside for other subscribers to read and enjoy.

Then there is a section in every Thursday Press, the "Outdoors" section. The section almost every Idaho outdoorsman and woman look forward to reading. The Outdoor section is written and edited for all the outdoor readers here in Idaho to read and enjoy; this is one section that is often filled with graphic images of hunters, fishermen and women. If you are not interested in it this may be the section that some may set aside for others to enjoy.

I also enjoy reading the "Editorial" section in the paper every day. It is a privilege how people are free to write and share with others their opinions and how they may feel about certain articles written or in this case, about whether we should have graphic images or not in the Outdoors section. It is also a section where people have the privilege in responding to others' feelings and opinions.

I am only one of hundreds, possibly thousands, of the Idaho Outdoor women who look forward to the Thursday section in The Press. My husband, our son, and our daughters also enjoy the Thursday Outdoors section. I know that the Outdoors section would not be the same without graphic images. The graphic images are not intended to offend anyone; they are intended to be part of the story. It is often difficult for people to imagine the sizes of a six-by-six bull elk or a 42-pound fish. The graphic images finish the story. Hunting and fishing may offend some people, but this is a heritage that has been passed on from many generations.

I respect and can understand people's feelings and opinions, but this is one that can easily be resolved. When the Thursday Press is delivered or you purchase it in a store and you are one of The Press readers who are not interested in the Outdoors section, please set the Outdoors section to the side, smile, and know even if it is not of interest to you, it is not hurting anyone and it is of interest to many other Outdoors Press readers.
