Eugene 'Pete' Carter, 97

| November 3, 2010 8:35 AM

Pete was born Jan. 19, 1913, in Horace Township, Kan. He passed away Oct. 31, 2010, in Coeur d'Alene. His boyhood was spent in Kansas, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas. In 1941, while residing in Entiat, Wash., he met and married Ilene Orr and later moved to Coulee City, Wash., where Pete worked as a blacksmith. By 1947, Pete and Ilene had two children and moved to Kellogg where they lived until Pet's retirement from Bunker Hill/Gulf Resources in 1975. Pete and Ilene were married 57 years before Ilene's passing in 1998 in Osburn.

Pete was an amazing man! He had a passion for the outdoors, fishing and hunting, growing tomatoes, playing his fiddle and telling jokes. He was a dedicated husband and father, a most wise and generous man. When faced with the decision to undergo a critical quintuple coronary bypass surgery at age 84 his response was, "Let's git' er' done." That's how Pete accepted all of life's challenges. With his courage, spirit of living life with a total integrity, compassion and his eminent character, he truly made the world a better place.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Ilene; four brothers, one sister and daughter-in-law Kum Chu Carter.

He is survived by his son, Gene Carter of Colorado Springs, Colo., and his daughter Dixie Carter of Bainbridge Island, Wash.; one brother, Charles Carter of Anchorage, Alaska, and one sister, Anna Mae Cannon of Spokane, Wash.; two granddaughters and four great-grandchildren. His numerous nieces and nephews idolized their "Uncle Pete" and to know him was to love him. He will be dearly missed by family and countless friends.

A celebration of Pete's extraordinary life will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 14, 2010, at the Lake City Senior Center located at 1916 Lakewood Drive, Coeur d'Alene.

Per his request, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to his "Hospice Angels" at Hospice of North Idaho, Hayden Lake.
