Lumbermen split at Missoula tourney

MISSOULA, Mont. — Matt Cade singled down the left-field line with the bases loaded and two out in the bottom of the eighth inning, scoring Austin Kiefer and giving the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen a 4-3 victory over the Helena Senators at the Dale Dahlgren Memorial Day “AA” tournament on Sunday.

Later Sunday, the Lums lost 9-0 to the Bozeman Bucks.

Pete Hoffman went the distance in the opener, striking out five in a five-hitter over eight innings. Mitch Bevacqua and Alex Krapas had RBI singles in the first inning, and Grant Curtis doubled in a run in the third.

In the second game, Bozeman took advantage of four walks and one hit batsman to score eight runs in the fourth.

Coeur d’Alene, 2-1 in the tourney, concludes round-robin play today vs. Missoula at 9 a.m. PDT, needing a win and possibly some help to advance to the title game later today.

In the “A” tournament, the Coeur d’Alene Loggers beat Bozeman 6-5 and lost to Missoula 8-4 to slip to 1-2 in tourney play.
