COEUR d'ALENE - No coach, no problem.

Filling in for head coach Tom Blanchard, Timberline High assistant coach Alan Morgan helped guide the visiting Wolves from Boise past the Lake City Timberwolves 13-6 in the state boys lacrosse championship game at Coeur d'Alene High on Saturday.

"He was back East visiting family," Blanchard said. "He was supposed to be back today, but he got bumped from the early flight and couldn't make it back in time."

Nick Cox and Cody Cantrell scored four goals each for Timberline (16-2), the Treasure Valley Lacrosse League champions, who defeated Lake City in last year's title game 14-4.

"Cody's been a go-to guy for us all season," Morgan said. "He motivates our team to do what we do to win games."

"I was very impressed with the way that Lake City played today," Morgan added. "They were able to move around out there fairly well. They are definitely improving."

Rain during most of the first half made for slippery conditions on Saturday.

"We've had some rainy days in southern Idaho," Morgan said. "I was just glad it didn't pour on us today."

Timberline scored five goals in the first quarter, but Lake City (8-5) battled back to a 5-3 halftime deficit.

"We did better than we thought we would," Lake City coach Dwight Emmons said. "Our kids showed a lot of heart, but Timberline is a great team. They are a quick, athletic team. Their league has been going for eight years longer, but we're starting to get a little closer to them."

Jesse Hansen had four goals and one assist, and Adam Marfice had two goals on 17 shots for the Timberwolves.

"Jesse won our iron man award this season," Emmons said. "He didn't come off the field very long today, if at all. Adam has been playing with cracked ribs for the past couple weeks. If I had 10 more players like those two, we'd be a pretty good team."

Hansen also had 17 shots on goal and an assist for Lake City, which lost in the state title game for the third straight year.

"We wanted payback after losing to them last year," Hansen said. "I thought we played well for having a young team."

Of the injury, Marfice didn't let it phase him on Saturday.

"Not really," Marfice said. "I just wanted to go out and see how many more I could crack today."

Marfice will continue his playing career next season at Westminster College, an NCAA Division II school in Salt Lake City.

"To come from a fourth seed in our league tournament to play in the championship game," Marfice said, "I can't complain."

Cameron Veeder had 10 saves for Lake City.

TIMBERLINE - Goals: Cody Cantrell 4, Nick Cox 4, Brett Jones 2, Nash Cantrell 3. Assists: Panos Panayloto 1, Mason Klein 1, Andrew Rusin 1.

LAKE CITY - Goals: Jesse Hansen 4, Adam Marfice 2. Assists: Hansen 1, Marfice 1.

Saves - Timberline, Keven Brown 6. Lake City, Cameron Veeder 10.
