Miguel Cabrera hit three home runs in a game for the first time in his career, but it was not enough to beat the visiting Oakland Athletics.

Ben Sheets worked seven innings in his longest start of the season and Landon Powell homered and drove in two runs in Oakland's 5-4 win over the Detroit Tigers on Friday night.

Yankees 8, Indians 2: Phil Hughes returned to form with seven strong innings, Robinson Cano hit a grand slam and New York routed visiting Cleveland.

Blue Jays 5, Orioles 0: Aaron Hill and Vernon Wells hit solo home runs, Shaun Marcum allowed six hits in six innings to win his fourth straight start and host Toronto beat Baltimore.

White Sox 4, Rays 2: At St. Petersburg, Fla., Freddy Garcia outpitched David Price and Alex Rios hit a two-run homer to help Chicago beat Tampa Bay.

Twins 2, Rangers 1: At Minneapolis, Kevin Slowey allowed a run pitching into the seventh and Minnesota scratched out enough offense to defeat Texas in a matchup of division leaders.

Royals 12, Red Sox 5: Yuniesky Betancourt hit a grand slam to cap a seven-run fourth inning and David DeJesus had four hits in Kansas City's win at Boston.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Brewers 2, Mets 0: Corey Hart ended New York's shutout streak at 35 innings with a game-winning homer in the ninth and Yovani Gallardo pitched his first career shutout for host Milwaukee.

Braves 7, Pirates 3: David Ross and Chipper Jones each drove in three runs, leading Atlanta past visiting Pittsburgh.

Phillies 3, Marlins 2: At Miami, Ryan Howard had two hits and scored Philadelphia's first run in 31 innings on a triple by Raul Ibanez, Chase Utley drove in the go-ahead run and the Phillies snapped out of a dreadful slump to beat Florida.

Reds 15, Astros 6: Drew Sutton hit a grand slam and Sam LeCure went six innings to win his big-league debut, leading host Cincinnati past Houston.

Dodgers 5, Rockies 4: At Denver, Manny Ramirez broke out of a slump with a go-ahead two-run homer in the sixth, and Los Angeles beat Colorado.

Giants 5, Diamondbacks 0: Matt Cain pitched a one-hitter to match a career best and San Francisco beat visiting Arizona.

Cardinals 7, Cubs 1: Albert Pujols and Yadier Molina each drove in a pair of runs, Chris Carpenter pitched into the seventh inning and St. Louis rolled at Chicago.

Nationals 5, Padres 3: Josh Willingham hit a three-run home run, Ian Desmond had a solo shot and John Lannan earned his first victory since April 10 as Washington held on at San Diego.
